Ole Miss has ranked among the country’s more explosive passing offenses this season under Lane Kiffin. The Rebels rank 19th nationally in “explosive pass rate” and will try to air it out successfully with Trinidad Chambliss this week as well. But Oklahoma’s defense is beginning to assert itself as one of the best in all of college football.
The health and performance of quarterback John Mateer is crucial for Oklahoma. He transferred from Washington State and has been recovering from an injury that hindered his performance against Texas two weeks ago. A healthy Mateer gives the Sooners a chance to win this game and compete for a playoff spot. Ole Miss' defense was torched by Georgia last week and will need to step up to avoid a second straight loss.
Oklahoma’s John Mateer appears to be back close to full health and is surrounded by weapons. Mateer has thrown for 1,567 yards, seven touchdowns, and six interceptions. He is also dangerous running with the ball, which gives the Sooners an edge in sustaining drives and converting red-zone opportunities.
