The Los Angeles Rams will host the New Orleans Saints in Week 9 of the NFL season on Sunday. The Saints are making a change at quarterback in this game, giving a rookie his first career NFL start. Will that decision pay off, or will the Rams pick up a third win in a row? Here, you can find my analysis of this contest in the NFC, including my Saints vs Rams prediction.
The Rams are coming off a bye week and have looked sharp through seven games. Los Angeles is 5-2 and had won two games in a row before their bye. They will attempt to take advantage of the extra rest and being at home as they attempt to get to 6-2 with a victory.
The Saints are in turmoil under center. After a 23‑3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week, they benched Spencer Rattler in favor of rookie Tyler Shough. Shough will make his first NFL start in a hostile road environment against a team with a very good pass rush.
The Saints’ offense has struggled mightily and that has made things tougher on their defense. The Rams are likely to have star receiver Puka Nacua back from an ankle injury. They will try to wear down the defense of New Orleans to pull away from them in the second half.
Stafford has been efficient all season. He has completed 66.1% of his passes for 1,866 yards. He is leading the league in passing touchdowns despite having a bye week. Stafford has 17 touchdown passes and just two interceptions going into this game. His consistency and experience give the Rams a clear edge at QB.
The Saints’ decision to move to Shough signals that this season is a lost cause for the Saints. Shough's only action this season came in a blowout loss and now he’ll face a Rams defense that is well‑prepared and loaded with talent. The Saints need to find a way to give Shough clean pockets to work out of if they are going to have any chance here.
The Rams should roll in this contest at SoFi Stadium. The Saints should struggle mightily on offense throughout this game, as Shough is likely to experience some growing pains in his first start as a pro. I'll take the under as my best bet in this game, as the Rams will likely be able to chew clock and keep this game relatively low-scoring against an overmatched opponent.
